TLID0008 – Shift Loads Using Bridge or Gantry Crane

TLILID0008 – This unit is designed to teach participants how to assess risks, assess loads and lifting requirements, to safely use a Bridge or Gantry Crane in lifting loads.

The subject is nationally recognised and can only be delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that complies with the governing standards of quality control and quality training and assessment. Assessment is based on competency i.e. ability to perform tasks to a required standard. Being able to read and write English suitable to understand the regulations and undertake the written test.

Course Overview

It includes planning work for the prevailing working conditions, using controls and operating systems to manage the operation of equipment, and locating and identifying load characteristics. It also includes safely moving the load; monitoring controls and stopping, shutting down and securing equipment after the completion of operations.

Work is performed under some supervision generally within a team environment.

Where the load shifting equipment operated is considered to be high risk work, the operator must hold a high-risk work licence.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you successfully complete the training and assessment, you'll receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment (SOA) for TLID0008. This is issued by Training Combined as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO 45490) and is recognised across Australia.

No, and this is worth understanding clearly. The TLID0008 is a short course for operating cranes with 3 or fewer powered movements. It results in a Statement of Attainment, not a High Risk Work Licence. If your workplace requires you to operate a crane from a permanent cabin or one with more than 3 powered operations, you'd need to pursue the CB Licence (TLILIC0016) through a separate pathway. Not sure where you sit? Get in touch and we can help figure out which qualification is right for your role.

For the TLID0008 course, no dogging licence is required as a pre-requisite for this short course. That said, if your work involves slinging loads or directing a crane operator when the load is out of their line of sight, you would need a Dogging Licence separately. The two qualifications complement each other well in a lot of workplace settings.

This course is suited to a wide range of industries including manufacturing, warehousing, engineering workshops, steel fabrication, automotive and general industrial settings all commonly use pendant-controlled bridge and gantry cranes. If your workplace has an overhead crane running on a fixed runway and you're expected to operate it as part of your role, this is the course for you.

Statements of Attainment don't technically expire and once issued, the qualification remains on your record. However, many employers and worksites require evidence of recent, current competency, and it's common practice to undertake a Verification of Competency (VOC) every couple of years to demonstrate you're still up to standard. Always check your employer's specific requirements.

Absolutely and prior experience is a bonus, not a barrier. Whether you're new to crane operation or you've been using one on the job without formal certification, this course is open to you. The assessment is competency-based, meaning you're assessed on your ability to perform the tasks safely and correctly, so experienced operators often move through the practical components with confidence.

No and this is something we're genuinely proud of! Unlike many RTOs across Australia that charge between $300 and $400 per additional attempt, we do not charge any re-assessment fees for our High Risk Work Licence training programs. If you need another attempt to demonstrate competency, we'll work with you to get there without any extra financial pressure. Our focus is on your success, not adding unexpected costs to your training journey.
